Ontario Exploring Feasibility of New Highway 401 Tunnel Expressway

As Ontario continues to grow at a record pace, our government is the only one with a real plan to fight gridlock and keep Ontario moving.

While Bonnie Crombie and the Liberals say no to every plan to help drivers, we’re saying yes to building and yes to getting drivers out of traffic.

Ministry of Transportation (MTO) modelling confirms that, without action, travel times on Highway 401 will double by 2051—adding up to 90 minutes to commutes across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

MTO projections also show that all 400-series highways, including Highway 407, will be at or above capacity within the next decade.

The Toronto region is currently losing an estimated $11 billion annually due to congestion, with commuters spending an average of 98 hours in rush-hour traffic each year.

The proposed tunnel expressway will help relieve this congestion, allowing commuters and goods to move more efficiently and reducing the time drivers spend in traffic—giving them more time with family and loved ones.

The feasibility work included in this technical evaluation will provide a clearer picture of how the proposed tunnel can support economic growth and alleviate gridlock.

This proposed tunnel expressway will not be tolled.

Our government is investing nearly $100 billion to combat gridlock by building and improving highways, roads, and transit—including transformative projects like the Bradford Bypass and Highway 413.
