Protecting Canada’s Energy Sovereignty

While President Trump’s tariffs continue to threaten Canadian workers and businesses, Ontario is fighting back to protect our economy.

Canadian sovereignty starts with energy sovereignty, which is why we are proposing the Northern Shield Energy Corridor, a crude oil pipeline and energy corridor that would strengthen Canada’s energy security by transporting oil along a 3,300-kilometre route from Hardisty, Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario.

This historic nation-building project would be built entirely within Canada, connecting the country with critical energy infrastructure to reduce reliance on foreign markets, increase supply to Ontario’s refineries in Sarnia, strengthen national security, and create tens of thousands of jobs for Canadian workers.

The proposed pipeline would move an estimated 500,000 barrels of oil per day for domestic use and export markets, with the potential to expand capacity to as much as 800,000 barrels per day.

As part of this plan, Ontario will determine a sovereign port option to bring Alberta oil to new tidewater access and new markets, and we are exploring a potential strategic petroleum reserve that will provide a secure, domestic and sovereign stockpile of fuels like diesel, gasoline and jet fuel.

Under the leadership of Premier Ford, Ontario is building generational projects that will transform our country, create prosperity and keep the True North strong and free for generations to come.
